No, there is no little person. Its a database of a lot of things or animals. Each of these things and animals has a special signature, that makes it easy for the game to differentiate.
For example a small database would be:

car - has wheels - has no long nose - is made from metal
elephant - has no wheels - has long nose - is not made from metal.
ship - has no wheels - has no long nose - is made from metal

Lets say you think of elephant. The game asks you "Is it made of metal". You say no. Therefore, the game knows, its not a ship or a car. Since there is nothing left, it can tell you, you thought of an elephant.

If you think of a car, the game will ask "Is it made of metal" and you say "yes". Now it can't decide, if you mean a ship or a car. Since both have no long nose, it would be unneccessary to ask about the nose. So it asks about wheels, since this will keep those two apart. If you say yes again, the game knows its a car.

In the real game, there is a huge database of things and how they are different from each other.
The game just tries to narrow down the differences to find the correct answer.

So, no magic, no little men. Just "data mining" in action...

A very teeny-tiny underpaid, very smart person.

I bought one for a Christmas gift for the SO, it was an impulse item.

For the $20 it cost, it was the gift he liked best.

BTW - there is a 20q.net website which is pretty cool and you can play for free.

What I want to know is- do the more expensive versions of the game, have a larger data base to work from.

Sorry, I've tried to figure it out to no avail. I even tried stumping the "little guy" with the thought of a RUTABEGA! I'll be darned if he didn't guess it.
