They are irritating aren't they? Had them last year. I had left a lemon wedge in the sink when I left town for the week end. I tried a bug bomb first..it had some effect but didn't get them all ,and I had to leave the house for 4 hours . What worked best was the old fashioned sticky fly paper that hangs down. I placed these by the sink and also turned on a fan to help direct the little monsters toward the fly paper. Also , when I saw them resting on what ever I vacuumed up as many as I could. This was working ,but too slowly, so I sprayed oil on any surface which they liked to land on. Yes, it was messy. The last thing I added, was to place a wet rag in the bottom of the sink, and then cover the sink with another towel, then I sprayed oil on the top towel after several had landed, and also would lift a corner of the towel and spray inside the sink. Finally, after all this, I got rid of the pests!! I hope I never see another one! I am VERY care-full not to leave any fruit lying about too long! Good luck! Almost forgot. could be vinegar flies. Place a pop can with vinegar ,and dish soap in a plastic bag near the sink..the flies go into the can and the soap keeps them from flying out again. I put this trap in a container with a Venus flytrap plant..I was desperate! If they are neither of these ,they might be fungus gnats and are in the soil of your house plants. Blow gently on the soil ,if you see little things crawling around and some fly off that is what they are. Sticky tape again, plus cut back on water. You are over watering the plants. Also you can change some of the soil. Poor off infected soil and top dress with fresh.. but still must get rid of existing gnats. Isolate infected plants..Cover with plastic bag and seal tightly at the top and bottom.

If they are fruit fly, you need to get rid of the fruit or refrig. it. But, here in NY, we had little flies, we called them gnats. We sprayed fly spray every day for a week or so. Spray on drapes, in cracks, under things. Make sure you follow the directions on the can. You can put a cotton ball soaked with the spray on screens, just poke a safety pin in it. put one on you lamps. You can do this with a paper clip. They are hard to get rid of but, it can be done. Oh, another thing, don't let envelopes lay around, my neighbor had some in a wall hanging thing for envelopes and they were full of these insects. We think they like the glue on the envelopes. Spray in your trash and waste baskets also. Good luck.

If they're those little gnat like things, try filling a shot glass with orange juice and leave it on the counter. It draws the little buggers in and drowns them. Get rid of any rotting fruit laying around in the mean time.

you obviously have some type of fruit or vegetable rotting away wherever these fruit flys congregate.....could be anything from potatoes to onions rotting away...time to clean up the area thoroughly once you get rid of whatever is rotting they will go away since they have no where to lay the eggs

Why is this under Mythology and folklore?
Throw away the rotten fruit. Take out all trash. Wash all dirty dishes. Wash all trash containers. Mop any sticky floors.

Stop leaving food out and close the trashcan. Spray a biodgradable pesticide where they are the strongest and then wait Once you break the breeding cycle (breeding places) they will die, they only live a couple of days anyway.

Fruit flies are white. Gnats are black. Gnats like anything rotten and puddles of water.
