Poverty stricken areas are populated predominantly by minorities. Being poor and in an area where crime, including drug dealing, are the easiest ways to make money its hard not to give into the temptation when most everyone you know is either doing them and can hook you up, or will just give them to you for free. How would you react when the best part of your day is probably getting high to forget about it.

Yes people in poor areas use drugs. But have you checked the stats on the use of crystal meth lately? That drug is being used in ALL areas rich and poor black, white whatever. You can't really say poverty causes drug use because how do you explain the coked-out,strung out millionaire celebrities? Then again if you do drugs long enough you will eventually run yourself into the ground not just physically but financially which can cause you to live in poverty. Also I don't live in the richest area but I am drug free and so are the people I choose to be around. Choosing to use drugs is a personal choice no matter what background you come from or what area you live in rich or poor. Every place has crackheads you just may not see them as fast or as much you would in an urban environment.

Govt stats say that a white person in rural areas is more likely to use drugs than an inner city people.
Poor people lead horrible lives, and often turn to drugs and alcohol. Their lives suck.
Rich people turn to drugs for the same reason; their lives often suck, but maybe in a different way. Their are tons of wealthy drug addicts wth good jobs.
It's very simple: happy people don't do drugs.

Actually you are only looking at illegal drugs. Many drug addicts get their junk from a licensed physician. Poverty has always been around. It is caused by lack of knowledge and lack of opportunity. There are rich people who do drugs and poor people who don't. There is no cause and effect there. Recent statistics show that the fastest growing group of illegal drug users are suburban white kids.
