When I did some quick research on fairies, the information I read sounded negative. What I read made fairies sound greedy and selish as they "take children"....
But I thought fairies were good? At least in children's movies they are. I always thought they were kind of like "guardian angels" for children.
Any links would be greatly appreciated too.

I DO believe in fairies! I DO! I DO!
Sorry, just had to have that Peter Pan moment.
Anyway, take Tinkerbell for instance, she was good, but extremely mischievious...to a point of being flat out naughty.
Don't listen to the people that say they don't exist. I asked a similar question about gnomes last week, and vampires about a month ago. Whether or not you actually believe in them is NOT what you asked.
Besides, SOMEBODY has to be stealing my socks from the dryer. I just refuse to believe they evaporate in the dryer.

There's been a lot of history/cultural revision in the last several decades. Fairies were often feared by superstitous people for stealing their babies among other things.
I find this cite has a lot of facinating things on it (not much about fairies though), but interesting facts about other wierd things:

Some 'species' of fairies are good (like the ones who help with good luck and chores around the house) and some are bad (like red caps, whose caps get their color from bathing their hats in the blood of their vicims.)
I actually got this from a book.

Faeries can be both....mostly mischievous. Sirona Knight wrote a book called Celtic Traditions: Druids, Faeries and Wiccan Rituals. The book talks about Faeries, Brownies, Little People etc...very informative reading.

I'm from Ireland and I grew up with this myth. In some parts of Ireland and in the "olden" days (before proper medicine etc..) baby boys were dressed in baby girls clothes because it was thought that the faeries would take them. Since faeries only took the boy babies. What happened is that cot death affects more boys than girls and when a baby boy died of cot death they thought the faeries had taken him =(
I don't have any links though.

You don't believe they are real and want the literary history of them. I would start with Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream and go from there.

I don't know... I think they have various natures, just like people. Is the Pooka evil? The Dullahan? The Marrow? The Banshee?

most are good but there are bad ones. most of the ones you hear of are good. I think that is because people want to believe all faries are good. here is one http://www.endicott-studio.com/rdrm/rrfairies.html and the other http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0768958.html,
