Science had come a long way. They wanted proof that an american step foot on the moon. A camara was mounted to the side of the space craft for future needs of proof or for studies.

The lunar lander had an automatic arm and camera that folded out of the craft and filmed the event.
I remember Walter Cronkite showing this on the news days before the landing.
