JAVA AND .NET ARE BOOMING THE IT INDUSTRIES
ABOUT PHP RIGHT NOW NO ONE IS USING it.
so go for .NET OR JAVA

I would have to go with Java and or .net
php/opensource is almost never seen in a commerical/industrial setting.
Been in the IT world for about 24 years now and still think a good old MidRange or Mainframe beats out distributed anyday of the week.

Java is almost identical to C# .Net so I would say grab yourself the Eclipse IDE and JDK... start writing a few Java classes!
Visual C# Express is a free download from the Microsoft MSDN site and is very useful for making .Net desktop applications, Visual Web Developer is also useful for making ASP .Net websites with and again is free as in beer.
If your looking to make desktop applications that have no dependency on the .Net framework or Java runtime being installed on the client machine, then you are able to purchase a few programs which include the library's and classes required by a process of "refactoring".
PHP / PERL / VB Script / JavaScript are interpreted languages and hence are never as fast as compiled languages regardless of however many MIPS your CPU can handle or how much RAM is resident on the server or client.
.Net can be scripted and compiled as can Java and being that the syntax is so similar in C# - J# to Java it really is quite clear that this path is not only able to produce faster more agile applications, it is also standardized around OO (Object Orientated) programming methods, which make it easier to write and debug.

does it matter?
if you are good at any of them, you will be paid top dollar regardless of the language!
Also idea on what php/opensource means really. Did you mean LAMP tech stack with P = PHP?
and btw, java is opensource now!

java together with other open source products is forming a deadly combination.Java itself has been given to open source community by Sun recently.
These days there is a new revenue model evolving where vendor wants to keep its product open source , so that ppl can contribute to its technology..while vendor make money on support and services.

Yes. They all are. And really you can use them all, each better for some functions then others. Most good webhosts offer multi-support to allow such use.
