I work for this great doctor and am married to a great man. I work 45-48 hours a week and I work for a small office. The problem is there is no one to fill in for me or the doctor's assistant if we have to be out for a sick day or vacation. We have two offices and the office manager manages both so she has little time to cover. She and the doctor promise to be hiring someone soon to fill the gap. I have been hearing that since November but no changes. I and my co workers are feeling overwhelmed and trapped. We really need an extra staff member so that there is room for a dr's appoinment, sick day, or personal day if needed. How should I approach my boss about this problem?

Tell the doctor how stressed you are personally and hopefully your fellow staff members will tell him/her the same thing. Tell him/her that if the situation doesn't improve you may have to look for other work. This is totally ridiculous and he/she knows it but if you guys keep working the hours and going in when you're sick the situation won't remedy itself. You might all have to have a sick in where no one shows up to work to make your point.

theres not much you can do but deal with it, i am in the same boat....except i work in a grocery store and people are quiting all the time and it takes weeks sometimes for the boss to hire someone to fill the gaps, so we have to struggle and make due, we actually fired two people tonight and i will almost guarentee that it will be at least a month or more for him to fill the spots...but hes not the one having to suffer so he dont realize how hard it is being short handed...good luck and hopefully something will work out for you soon....i would just confront him and say that the employees are at their limits and need more help a.s.a.p. and go from there
