Jaques Plante was the best from the old school. Back then however, goaltending was a lot different. Since the butterfly style took over, the best retired would have to be Patrick Roy, although I hate him. He has a lot of size, and was really good at using it. Thats really hard for me to admit as a Detroit fan.

Patrick Roy: take the records Roy broke, the fact he has 3 Cups, 3 Vezinas, an 11 time All-Star, numerous records, and revolutionzed the position of goaltending to what we know it as today.
Jacques Plante was equally important to hockey, least for introducing the mask as an everyday piece of equipment for goalies. He set the wins record, which 2 have since broken. He has the most Vezina Trophies ever, and his career numbers are better than most any goalie can dream of putting up today.

Sawcuck, Vezina, and Plante : They played at the top of their game in an era with inferior equipment and didn't even wear masks, so that makes them pretty d*mn tough in my book.
More recent retired NHL goaltenders I would include Patrick Roy and Grant Fuhr.
