I would try tanning lotions before attempting sunbeds. Try Fake Bake...its a great tanning lotion. It can be found at Sephora or online.

Ask for referrals for a good tanning salon; don't necessarily go to the cheapest place. Go someplace where they know what they're talking about; a nail or hair salon is NOT your best bet in this case!!
Use a protective cream that's safe for a tanning bed (some lotions will harm the tanning bed) and expect to start slow and work up over the course of several days or even a month. I'm fair, and if I start slow at a place that changes its bulbs regularly, I can be pretty dark in four to five weeks. I start at three or four minutes, and work my way up. The tans have lasted several weeks to several months, and may depend, in part, on how much water you've had before you go (it's best for your skin if you stay hydrated) and if you're on any medications.
If you are diabetic, or have Lyme disesase, those are two cases in which I know that the medications indicate that you have to stay out of the sun.
Keep in mind that tanning isn't really safe, so you don't want to make this a lifestyle choice.
There are literally thousands (over 3,000) of articles on about.com, some of which include dangers, pros and cons, and using self-tanning lotions.

I use to work at a tanning salon. And a lot of girls were like you. If you go into a regular bed don't go the full 20 minutes just do like 5 at first and work your way up. Buy a lotion the girl at the counter she would know the best one( I always liked BIPOLAR). If they have a bronzing bed that's the one you want to get into, and you can go full time(it for fair skinned people)!
Hope this helps!

Tanning beds apply the same UVA rays the sun does, so if you burn in the sun you will burn in the bed. UVA rays are now proven to cause cancer. Sun (when you get too much, it's great in moderation) is the largest part of where we get wrinkles so be careful. The tanning bed will give you fine lines 10 years from now! Is it worth it? The airbrush tan salons offer now gives such a natural and non-stinky way for us fair girls to look tan, they're really worth it!!!

if you're the type that can't suntan in the sun, then you're going to burn in the booth.
i've been tanning plenty of times, and all the booths will tell you this. basically, fifteen minutes in a tanning booth is like, two hours in the sun; so if you naturally burn, you're going to naturally burn.
if you naturally sunburn, i would reccomend getting a high end sunless tanning cream (check at your local health club or fitness center; or local dayspa. at the very least, they can point you in the right direction) oh, and a tip: if you sunless tan, make sure to wash the palms of your hands or wear gloves. the way people can tell its fake is because tan creams make your palms orange.

Hi Ashley. I don't know about your case, but I have a red-haired friend who goes to the tanning bed. You know how red-heads freckle and burn, right? Well, she is tanned. In the sun, she freckles, but with the intensity of a tanning bed, she tans. Good luck!

If you tend to burn when you tan outside, the same thing is likely to happen in a tanning bed.

yep, skip it, learn to enjoy your paleness. buy clothes to compliment you skin tone...bare minerals (the one they sale on qvc) have great bronzers, to help you look sun kissed. But the tanning beds, have you ever seen any one that gets addicted to that? You will always look ten to fifteen years younger with your ivory skin. And if you have facial problems, use that money on a dermatologist, get ahead of the curve taking your looks seriously, our face is our calling card to the future, not beauty like others, but beauty by working with what we have....also check out www.sebastian.com they have the top of the line hair products, the reason you don't see it out on a shelf is because it would outsell all products available to us...good luck...also to moisture the skin from the inside out, check out liquid cQ10, it is the very best possible in vitimin supplements...

Tanning beds are a terrible idea for anyone who burns easily.
