You're right. I hate people that say that servers are tip hungry. Trust me, I want to be tipped well, but I'm not going to beg you for it. But, I do believe that you should tip at least 15% if the service is decent.
People don't get it that without tips, we would probably only get a paycheck of $20 a week, if that. No one can live off of that.

Actually she is very correct. I am a server and I make $2.13 per hour. We depend on out tips to pay our bills. I get a pay check only because I have 3 children and claim more but I know many servers that get no pay check at all. I have been a server for about 15 years now and do you know that the server wage has not gone up even one cent since then and minimum wage has gone up several times.

In England tipping is not formal unless there is a party of eight or more. I once left one pound coins at the bar every time I went for a round of drinks. After about four rounds and four coins sitting there I asked my brother in law if my money wasn't any good. He went flying up there to pick up the coins and said tipping wasn't normal and that if I wanted to give her 50 cents it would be okay. When I was in Chicago I always tipped $3 on bills under ten and then modified that according to the amount of people being served for bills over $10. You need to be more creative in claiming your tips. Ideally you would only claim 10 percent in tips and consider the rest a gift from friends. They keep coming back to see you, right?

Yes, I did know that, and I am sooooooo happy I don't live in "most states".
My wage just went up to $7.50 per hour !!
Even so, ALL servers are in it for the tips.
The check still sucks after the IRS gets a hold of it.

Yes, but after the recorded tips at the end of the night the owner must increase their wage if the tips plus their hourly do not equal minimum wage.

I'm sorry to disagree with you, but you are incorrect. If that was the case, as high as our poverty level is, it would be even higher. $2,766.40 per year, based on 40 hrs. per wk.
With $2.33 being the average, it would mean many would be earning even less. Do you understand that under those circumstances when all is said and done, they will actually pay no taxes.

I knew this. Lousy service or especially copping an attitude with me can reduce a tip in a hurry. Other than that I tip well. In fact several servers even greet me and ask if I wan to sit in their area.

I was required to pay my waitresses $3.10. I couldn't go below that. A couple of them got a raise to $4.00. But they got to keep all their tips. When they recorded their tips, they only had to write in enough to get them to minimum wage.
