We usually calculate after tax but we tend to leave closer to 20% tip anyways. I know one person who takes the tax (8.25) and doubles that amount and leaves that as tip, to make it easier to calculate.

You should take the tax and times by 3. To get a tip. Its a very small tip but its the amount you should at least leave.
Plus
If you order an alcoholic drinks extra $1 per drink. If you have kids and make a mess. Flat out $5 extra tip.
Keep your glass full and get your order out fast and hot extra $2 tip.
Desert and or appetizer extra $2 tip
More then 15 people extra $1-3 tip per person. It all depends on how long you stay there.

Calculate after. Many places make the servers tip out their bartenders and bussers based on sales (which include tax), hardly fair since tax is not considered part of the servers' sale. None the less 15% is pretty minimal now. A server rely's soley on their tips, so if they work hard for you, show your appreciation. What's a few dollars more, they will remember you! In addition, if paying by credit card, keep in mind that most places are now charging the server for the 4% of the tip that the credit card companies charge the restuarant, so the server is paying for that tip!

include the tax . If you are worried about the extra few dollars that might add on, you should eat at home. I had lunch yesterday with a good friend it was 26.50 before tax 28.04 after tax. I left 33 dollars around an 18% tip. The waitress is depending on every penny of the check. My food arrived hot, was good, and she was really friendly and was working very hard. They live on tips not the 2.10 an hour they make.

Hate to break it to you, but the minimum tip in most metro areas is now 20%. That's for decent service. Take 10% of your total tab and double it - that's the minimum amount you should leave. 15% is really on the low side these days.
You should up it to 25% or more for high-end upscale restaurants, exceptional service, or if in general you treat the waitstaff poorly.
N.B.: If I am on a first date with a man who treats the staff badly, he doesn't get another date. It's THAT important.

When you are calculating it it should be calculated after taxes... also if you had any discounts or free meals it should include the price of what it would have been without those taken off your bill

After.....
don't be such a penny pincher !!
If you don't have to shop for, cook or clean-up after a meal, is a few more dollars/cents really gonna kill you?
I sure hope not.
