Im 45 years old and quite frankly Im Beginning to feel paranoid and anxious around people. I usually have a heightened comical sense of humor. I work in a proffessional environment and I think people see me in a different light because I kid around and like to have fun at work. IM good at what I do but sometimes people take things a little too seriously. By the way I work in the medical field helping people with cancer.

Maybe they think you should take things a little more seriously by not joking around so much. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Some people will think you not professional even though you are good at your work. A little seriousness does not hurt. I would not want a technician, nurse, or doctor treating me for cancer if they were acting a little goofy. A genuine smile and warmth goes a long way.

Just be yourself and don't feel you have to be something you are not. People who try too hard usually are not accepted by others as much as they want to be. Relax and be attuned to the mood of the ill person each time you are around them. It is hard to have cancer, but it does help if someone takes the time to care. Sometimes it may be good to joke and laugh, and other times it helps to just be peaceful and pleasant around the patient. We all have different moods at different times, so that advice works with most anyone at any age.

Because you work with cancer all day every day; a sense of humour will lighten things up for you. It would be hard to be serious all the time but you have to be careful who you kid around with. It's a sensitive subject especially for the the one who has cancer.

It's OK to kid around, especially while helping people with cancer to feel better, but you should, however, bear in mind, that you're a 45-year old man, not a teen anymore, so you should take as models those of your age. Follow them, not pop teen superstars or whatever... Also, be yourself!!!!

Everyone needs something to "lighten up with," even if in a job of such emotional pain. Watch M*A*S*H--see how the dedicated doctors, operating on dying soldiers joke during surgery. Otherwise, insanity might set in.

I have seen young people who act old, and old people who act young... Be yourself, this world needs all of us- despite our querks and differences.

I don't think there's anything wrong with how you act, just as long as you respect your coworkers and don't jeopardize your job. Just be yourself.
