There are laws that can protect you. The first question is whether or not you injured your back at work our outside of work. If you were injured at work, you should file a claim for workers compensation and stay home until you are healthy enough to return to your job. You can not be fired for filing a claim.

If you were injured at work or outside of work, you may be protected by the americans with disability act. Ask you boss if they can make a reasonable accomodation at your job. For example, is it reasonable to ask for a tall chair at the register versus standing all day.

If neither of these work, does you company have a short-term or long term disability policy and benefits program, if so, you might want to go on a leave of absence until you are fit to return.

See if they'll accommodate you. If not, then you:
a) quit
b) take the issue to the labour board (which could take months)
c) if you hurt your back on the job then consider workman's compensation (which could take months)
d) ignore the doctor and try to work as before (after all, he doesn't pay your bills)
e) sue them (which could take months)
f) find a job that can accommodate your back issues (which could take months)
g) choose a or d

Sorry. That's a sad situation which is played out all too often everyday all over the world.

Sounds like you'll be off on disability for awhile but hope you get better and then find a different job !
Look for office work . or . visit a temp agency so you can try multiple work opportunities !

Ask for a different type of work. They should work with you. I don't think they can fire you if you have a medical problem. They should be able to find something for you. Be honest with your employer and get everything in writing just in case.
