I don't think it's too young, but she may be physically not mature enough for one yet. If she has an intact hymen, it will be nearly impossible to insert and could cause pain if she breaks the hymen trying. You can find the "slender" variety of tampons, and that would be the best one to try. When my eldest daughter decided she wanted to try them, I bought a box of slender size tampax. We went through the basics of how to insert, and then I left her with the box. I told her it didn't matter how many she used trying to learn, so not to get upset if it took a few to catch on. She wasn't able to wear a regular size comfortably, but found the slender one's just right. The second daughter has an intact hymen, and even the slender size was not comfortable for her just yet. So it really depends on the girl, as to her physical development. Also, you have to make sure they are comfortable with the idea themselves, they usually find the idea of actually touching themselves there a bit "eeewww" the first time you mention it and they realize what is involved. So be prepared for her to reject the idea all together, at least for now. But if she is able to insert one and be comfortable, there is no reason why she couldn't use them.

I personally did not start using tampons until I was 16. I have a daughter who just turned 16 (she started at 12)and she still uses pads. She tried tampons a couple of different times, but does not like the way they feel. I would start her off with pads until she gets a regular cycle and knows what kind of blood flow she is going to have. Plus if tampons are not inserted right they can be very uncomfortable. At least wait until the summer so she can get used to using them. You can also consult your doctor.

i think 11 is too young simply because they are naturally a little less responsible. she might accidently forget to take it out! pads aren't all that bad, i'd say 16 is a good age to start using tampons.

*** u know how responsible she is...will she remember to change them as required? if so, then she's fine to start wearing them...they even make slender ones so they'll be more comfortable for her.
