I think they were just too angry and couldnt control themselves. I think thats why Zidane 'head-butted' that guy. Also everyone was too tired... oh yeah, and a streak of luck for the Italians.

I think Germany played a good game but the better team prevailed. I believe that Germany changed their style of heavy attack for the Italians which played into the Italian favor. Germany couldn't afford to send a lot of guys forward as they usually do to try to get a lot of goals because there is just too much skill on the Italian team that could take good advantage of that type of strategy from Germany. I think that Germany was forced to play Italy's style of game and lost! Germany is a very young team and they should do well in the future. Italy has always had Germany's number.

With that being said, I don't think that Germany even deserved to be in the semi-finals. I think that as usual, in the world cup, the officiating heavily favored the host team and this was especially apparent in the game against Argentina that I think was robbed from Argentina.

Germany played hard and had all the calls go their way, next time the world cup won't be played in Germany, let's see what will happen!

On that game Germany and Italy played consistently until the extra time. On the extra time, the Germans were calmed, because they have a really good history with penalty. Whilst, Italy was probably a little more worried about the penalty.

Then in the last few minutes Italy found an opening, made good use of it, and before they were able to counter or recover Del Piero's goal was done.

It is quite a shame though they have a really great team this year. =] Oh well it's 2010 to worry about for them now.

They had the momentum, they had the home crowd, and they had the determination. It was evenly matched for the entire game and Italy was just fortunate that they had a scoring chance and took advantage of it. That goal pretty much took it all out of Germany and the second goal was due to the German let down. Italy had a good team, but im still not convinced that they were the best team in the tournament.

None. It's just happened that Grosso found the net which was a bit lucky. Then Germany hurried for an equalizer which really opened their defence that gave Gilardino and Del Piero a chance to counter-attack which was successful.

However if you insist for a reason, I could pinpoint the Quarter final between Germany and Argentina which went to penalties. It probably took its toll on the German team that's why they lost some incisiveness during their match against Italy.

As first a correction to Cyn's answer.
Zidane is not a German player and what you're referring to is the final match Italy-France....!!
Settled this point Germany has done its best but let's say that Italy deserved the final. I know that Buffon did a miracle just before Italy scored the first goal (come on Grosso !!) but you must not forget that just a few minutes earlier Gilardino and Zambrotta had hit the post and the crossbar.

The only thing that went wrong for the Germans for the entire World Cup was not letting Oliver Kahn start in net for them. How do you sit the only keeper in WC history to win the Golden Ball?

As for what went wrong for that specific game:
After Italy scored their first goal, the Germans pressed the attack too much, which exposed gaps in their defense allowing the Italians their 2nd and 3rd goals to clinch the match.

it is going to be a competent tournament to confirm. do no longer underestimate Spain. Many thought they does no longer make it this a approaches, yet they have come alive. Germany is youthful, speedy, and robust; I provide credit the place credit is due. yet Spain is now working greater efficient than ever as a team and is familiar with a thank you to apply their strengths. Germany greater efficient keep their egos in verify.

Interesting question. The German team has a history of sheer determination, courage and fortitude. In other words never giving up!
But in that game it seemed to me like they lost hope before the fat lady had sung. They unfortunately and uncharacteristically lost the mental battle.
