the languages are totaly different ,but both are exstremely difficult to learn or understand ,one lot comes from Asia and the other is Native American
dont worry about being confused

I lived with central American Indians for a while ,and they got words that can mean 10 different things
it all depends on who says it and how and in conection with what
so only people who speak the lingo pretty good would be able to understand them.

I do not know anything of indians from India ,but the language sounds very complicated.

The reason there is confusion is because of people not using the correct terminology. The Red Indian, as you so racistly put it, is better know as a Native American, and has been for the last 60 years, whereas Indian refers to a person from the contenent of India.

Because the word "Indian" is used to describe both ! Unless your canadian, where indian is Indian and "red indian" which would be considered horribly prejudiced up here is "First Nations People", "Aboriginal" or "Native".

An American Indian (Native American) is an ancestor to someone whose land was stolen by new, European Americans.

An Asian Indian lives (or is a decendant of one who lived) in the country India.

When Columbus discovered America (whether or no he was the 1st) so called "red" indians (native americans) were given that name because it was thought (wrongly) that he had discovered India of (Asia).

I can help you. Whenever I say...that my husband is indian...people automatically assume that he is a native american...and I have to clear things up...he is asian indian...an indian from india. I think that most people are just so used to red indian...that they forget there is another type of indian altogether!!! Another way that I tell people is that...my husband is a "Gandhi Indian"...and everyone knows who Gandhi was...so that helps!!! Gandhi was from the state of Gujarat...which is where my husband is from. In fact...my husband told me that he didn't live far from Gandhi's house!

If you say Indian, normally its asian.

If you say Native Indian, then you are talking about American Indians such as the Cherokee.

Well I think that it is because most people that don't know the difference are idiots.
You could also blame Christopher Columbus for mistakenly calling them Indians as well.

Too many ignorant people in the world today that just lump everyone together, different from themselves. Why is it necessary to catagorize in the first place. We are all different from another just as human beings.
