If two 'quarter' tests plus a final determines the semester grade, where does the midterm enter in to the grade?

Final grade=1st quarter grade(.45) + 2nd quarter grade(.45) + .1x
where x=score on final exam

If you want to get a 90% as your final grade and you have a 95% for 1st quarter and 88% for 2nd quarter, your equation would look like this:

.90=.95(.45) + .88(.45) + .1x

.90=.42 + .39 + .1x

.90=.81 + .1x

.09=.1x

x=.9 or 90%

((1st quarter grade) x 0.45) + ((2nd quarter grade) x 0.45) + ((midterm grade) x 0.10) = grade you want

Substitute in the 1st and second quarter grades, as well as the grade you want and do some simple algebra to solve for the midterm grade. ta da!

that depends on the final grade you want and the grades you have so far.
