GED= General Educational Development test, which, if you pass, awards you with the General Equivalency Diploma. It means you have been tested and have the knowledge equivalent to someone who has a high school diploma.

Edit: the GED is taken in lieu of a high school diploma. But in most states you have to be at least sixteen to take it.

General education diploma and no you do not need one if you are graduating and receiving a diploma from the school. It is only for the people who did not finish school and did not graduate. It works the same as a diploma when applying for a job.

General Education Diploma. It's an alternative diploma you can acquire, by writing a test. You can write it anytime as an adult if you never passed your grade 12.
