I am not intending to offend, but my wife, daughter and I are talking about the lisp that many gay people have. We were wondering if that was intentionally done to annouce the gayness, or is it a biological thing that comes with being gay for some? We have gay friends and family, and they don't lisp, so we know it's not something all gay people do. Can one of you kind lispers please fill us in?

It's not something you even notice; it just sets in as you come more comfortable with your personality. When I came out as bi back in April of '06, I had a normal guys' voice, but over time my voice got higher and developed sort of a "lisp", and I didn't even know about it until me and my gay gal friend were talking about it at Walgreens and I mentioned that I didn't have the "gay voice" and she just looked at me and told me to record my voice on my phone. I was shocked, but I've gotten used to it and actually like it now. The lisp is independent to effeminate gays/bis and only those with higher voices. It all depends on what pitch/tone of voice you start out with, but mine happened to be one that developed a lisp as it got higher.

Heh I don't lisp but a good friend of mine has a sight one. I also know some straight men who lisp.

It can be for attention. It can be to play up the stereotype and have fun with it. It can also be something that you just picked up as a child (hence it's learned rather than biological (I have yet to hear of a biological disposition to lisping ;) )).

Cheers,

Ya a good majority of them have that gay trait of a lisp. Maybe it has to do with which guy is the male or female. I think the famale acting gay men have the lisps.

Go to a gay leather bar, if you can stand the smell of cigar smoke.

The big muscly leather daddies I have sex with sound more like Russell Crowe than Woody Allen (who is STRAIGHT)..

Michael Jackson is supposedly 'straight' yet he sounds more 'gay' than I do. As does Pee-Wee Herman. He's straight, too.

I know more heterosexual men that sound 'girly' that gay men who sound 'gay'. Grow up.

Its NOT A LISP. A speech defect consisting in pronouncing s and z like or nearly like the th-sounds of thin and this, respectively. What YOUR TALKING ABOUT is a SIBILIANT "S" like the word "snake" pronounced "sssnake."

Please learn about what your speaking about.

it is an act. its an attempt to gain a sense of femininity by those who feel the need to want that feeling. not all gays feel the need to act out.
