What do you mean by necessary? Some people argued that it was, because they believed in the "domino effect," that if Vietnam went Communist it would start a chain reaction of other countries going that way. Other people thought this was ridiculous.

We lost Vietnam to the Communists. Communism as a world power has been officially dead for years. Based on that, it is clear that the domino effect advocates who thought that Vietnam was a necessary war to prevent the spread of Communism were full of crap.

The reason for the Vietnam War was known as "the domino effect." Some people during the time reasoned that if one nation fell under Communist control, other nations would fall to communism like dominoes. The U.S. went to war against North Vietnam to try to stop communism from spreading.

Vietnam was a waste of human life and time. It was as necessary as the war in Iraq. The USA had no business going there in the first place, there were mixed reasons and the veterans who returned from the war were treated like crap, even to this day. My father fought in the vietnam war, almost lost his life, got a purple heart, came home and "uncle sam" gave him drugs, with the purpose of ending his life quicker so they wouldn't have to pay out money to him since due to the injuries in the war, he could not work. They finally succeeded and my father died in 2003 from a tumor the size of a golf ball the veterans hospital claim they simply did not find. So if you are a veteran, get outside insurance, the Veterans Hospital is only good for the pharmacy, most of their doctors are incompetent.

There are a lot of Vietnamese who would say it was.
The VN penninsula was being ruled by corrupt dictators propped up by the French and then the U.S. Most people don't realize that VN has been occupied by the Chinese for centuries. It was a natural for the Chinese to step in and liberate the North and then the rest of the continent.
No, was is a waste of life and resouces. Vietnam was a horrible experience for the soldiers and the citizens. But today the people are so much better off than before the war. I think they would have progressed to that point with or without the war.

Communism was the threat at that time. Stopping the spread was the objective. But, much like the fight against Islam, we did not give it our all and the country was not behind our military, so the opposition took that as a strong hold, and it was.
We have since learned that they were about to raise the white flag when Americans began to demonstrate and throw a fit. This weakened our resolve and they knew it would, so they kept coming.

No wars are necessary. If people would just submit to the one true warlord, then there would be peace for all time.

But not a whole lot of individual freedom.

The French had been unsuccessfully fighting that war for years. They strongly recommended that we not get involved. But the communism scare was still in its heyday.
