First is to realize that you are not immune to disasters. In other words, you will encounter negatives in your life. The next thing is to realize that there is always something good that comes from everything bad that we encounter. But are you willing to seek it ? Once we realize that bad things or negative things are not the end of the world, then we can begin to look past the bad and seek the good. We begin to take each day in a more positive manner.

kind of depends on the situation. if there's someone else involved, put yourself in their shoes. we can't know everything someone is going through at an exact moment, so we can't know why they act a certain way.
don't take anything personally. usually comments directed towards you are a reflection of something that the speaker has a problem with in themselves or the world or WHATEVER, but don't take things personally.
life is temporary, things will always change. if you're in a bad situation, it will change eventually. remember a few years ago, when something happened and you thought it was the end of the world? well, it wasn't, and you're still around and (hopefully) doing ok. so whatever has you down today will probably not feel so horrible when you look back on it in the future.
take an active role in your life and you can't victimize yourself.
globally, try to help fix the mess we're in. i'm not saying go work for an NGO or build an orphanage (unless thats what you want to do, and kudos), but try to make each encounter with people meaning and positive, thereby leaving things more "positive" than how you found them. that will help you and others to think positively.
personally, i find that thinking "well, it could be worse," doesn't really help me. it keeps me focused on possible negatives. being naturally thankful for what i have, or focused on the current ACTUAL situation keeps me in a much better frame of mind.

Think opposite of how you would normally think. I know, sounds ridiculous, huh? But I promise, it helps. If there's a bad situation, turn it into a good one. Like, instead of thinking negatively about tripping over a pebble, be thankful you didn't fall flat on your face and break your nose--simpe stuff like that. Conciously turn your negative thoughts into positive ones, and try and make the best of each situation. It sounds cheesy, but it works.
Oh, and laughter always helps. Even if, sometimes, you have to force it at first. Eventually, it comes freely and whole-heartedly.

Cast out negative thoughts immediately. This will open the thinking to the positive.

When you know you are thinking negatively, correct yourself immediately ! Get a book of quotations, or visit a website, and
pick out the best quotes. Post them on your bathroom mirror, on
your car's dashboard, on your deak, or in school books.
You can change it if you want to bad enough! Remind yourself that negative thinking leads to negative living, and does nothing but drag you down !

To a large extent, it is a sort of "default" attitude of people who really are famous for positive thinking.
So, initially, work towards it consciously, watching one's own thought process, seeking, looking for positive aspect of everything around.

It's definately in your outlook so you have to try to have a positive one. You have reframe the negative thoughts to posivite ones. Don't overact, is good practice if someone doesn't speak to you one day dont assume they are mad at you but think they are just having a bad day.

I would venture a guess that the first step to positive thinking is to think you can positively think positively.

Pretty much look at the situation can always be worse, so there fore you learn to be thankful that you can still make it through, I usually just laugh and move on and think things can be worse.

There are numerous people who would make fun of the possibility of altering their destinies. This is due to the fact that it thinks that no one gets more that what is put in his fate.
