It's important to say that tinnitus is a symptom and not a disease. Some people will have tinnitus because their Cochlea is damaged. And in a few, it could be caused due to hearing loss. But of course, the most common cause of tinnitus is exposure to loud noises. The noise can be a sudden burst, or it could be a constant banging that hits the ear drum and travels inside.

A good guide you can read about tinnitus and some good natural remedies can be found here: http://tinnitus.toptips.org

Discounting people who may have actually *seen* ghosts :-)

My guess is that it's because the thing we mortals fear more than anything else (on an instinctive level, even if your faith reassures you) is death. One way to deal with something that frightens us is to put it into perspective with stories. So we tell or want to hear scary ghost stories in order to deal with our fear of death.

Another possibility is that we don't want to think that, once we die, that's it. Over, Kaput. The idea of ghosts tells us people can be immortal.

each person probably has their own reasons - varying from seeing one, thinking they have seen one, hearing credible stories, wanting to believe in something outside of the 'norm', having faith, wanting there to be life after death, scared of them. Some people just want something to believe in. It doesnt make them right or wrong.
