"Even if our new strategy works exactly as planned, deadly acts of violence will continue, and we must expect more Iraqi and American casualties," he said. "The question is whether our new strategy will bring us closer to success. I believe that it will." -Bush

So you think a lack of casualties is our goal? It would be a nice goal, but our enemies don't share it. They want plenty of American and Iraqi casualties whether we retreat from Iraq or not. The difference (well one of the differences) will be that the American casualties will be civilians in the US instead of soldiers in Iraq. Do the math; which is better, 3000 civilians dead in one day or 3000 soldiers dead in 3 years?
The ordinary Iraqis are struggling heroically, so they deserve help anyway.

I makes sense in the fact that even Bush probably realizes on some level there can be no 'victory' in Iraq as defined as turning Iraq into a flourishing Democracy. He's just setting the bar low enough so that when we eventually leave Iraq he can still claim victory, saying 'look, the plan worked perfectly, there were more casualties in Iraq just as I predicted, victory is mine'. Right now Bush is just struggling not to look like the douche bag he truly is.

yeah, i'm sure he's thinking that. only a whiny *** ignorant liberal would say such a thing. people like you have attacked this pres. from day one and you never let it go. good job. obviously, you don't see the true enemy the world faces do u ? i'm sure this pres. is not into appeasement of the enemies as you surely must be. how about blaming the real enemy of america, they are the ones in dirty night shirts, with the rags on their head in case you did not catch it withing the last 40 plus years. wake the hell up and seek to actual stand up and fight an enemy we have never experienced before. this war will be lost if you can't even bring to bear who the real enemy of this world is, just another ignorant soul i guess you are. appeasement and diversity mindset gets you dead, nothing more, those who do not learn from history, are bound to repeat it, cowards. appeasers, the true lefties are weak and mentally sick, because they have no common sense. wake up america

What he was referring to is we need to fight more to win the peace. People will die. I believe he is setting reasonable expectations. He has to know by now that the main reason why some Americans are against the war is they do not understand that people die in war. The Pres did not set proper expectations when we went into this.
