It's under the picture frame on the purple door. It's aggravated my wife and me for quite some time. We've never lived in an apartment building as old as theirs or in a city as large as theirs.

It's an old fashion peep hole with a door ringer. The peep hole in the frame is newer because in the "old days" the people outside could see you when you looked out. The ringer had a twist knob on the outside, which moved on the inside when they rang it.

It is a coat hook. They hung a jacket on it in a couple of episodes. I remember, b/c I said there is a coat floating on the door, then later in the episode, my friend was like "it wasn't floating, there is a coat hanger there". I honestly don't think it is in all of the episodes.
Oh, and isn't it weird that Monica would choose such an ugly and gody hanger?
Oh and one more thing.. I have seen those hangers on doors in the same place in many older movies. Mostly 1940's and early 1950's. The friends apartment is in really good shape for being that old, so i don't know why they chose to put that on the set, maybe it has a special meaning to someone on set.

On the inside of Monica and Rachel's apartment door it is a rectangle picture frame surrounding the peep-hole and is painted the same purple color as the door. On the inside of Joey and Chandler's front door is one of those magic eraser kids toys that you can write on and then move the little thingy on the side and it erases what you have drawn.

I am pretty sure that it is a door bell on the other side of the door there is what looks to be a key but I am guessing that it is a lever of some sort to ring it. I think they had those in the older apartments so when you got to the door you could just ring instead of knock. That is what I came up with.

It looks to me to be the doorbell. Ya know the part inside your house that makes the ding dong sound? I don't know I'm just taking guess. Maybe it's an extra peep hole for short people.

it's an old peep hole the brass cover moves to the side with a large glass to see through.
