You need to open your finder (its the little blue smiley guy in ur dock) then applications > find the ones you dont need anymore and drag them to the trash... empty it... then u need to type cache into your finder's search bar (its top right) once find it delete everything in this (u wont loose anything its just a general clean-up) then type in the word reciepts then delete only the ones you dont want by draging them to your trash and empty it. Then restart n u are good to go! If u have alot of music then take the music file (u can find this in finder also) then go into ur profile name for the computer and find ur music folder open it then itunes music is in there drag that to ur CDRW or external harddrive (make sure it went on) delete everything in ur itunes library... music and things take up alot of space.

Your start up disc? Why delete files from here.

Ok, you can try looking for backup files and deleting them.
You can delete old stuff you don't need anymore
You can archive large files to save space.
You can write files to CD, DVD or flash drives and then erase them from your computer.
Empty your trash
Clean up your mail and make sure it is gone.
reset safari, to clean out those old cookies.

I did this all last night, went from 4 gig to 9.3 gig free in about 1 1/2 hours.

After you get done, shut off your Mac and then restart. It will defrag for you. This will improve performance.

Delete unneeded apps and files. You can also delete all your log files, caches with YASU. Download Monolingual, it's an app that will delete language files, iTunes alone has 20 MB worth. Just don't choose English for deletion or you will need to install OS X thereby losing all your files. Another app you might need is Tidy Up! It will locate duplicate files and if you wish, delete them.

I suggest you get an external drive to transfer your data to i.e. music, photos and important docs.

Hello alysiallen,

Starting over has some great advice. Also you can delete some of those podcasts from iTunes. A friend told me that if you have a large music collection, that you should try to convert all of those big AIFF music files to smaller sized MP3 files.

Best of luck to you.

I'm averaging less than a gig available on all my machines 97-99% disk usage. But that because of a major data analysis program I'm working on has taken up all my free space on 4 machines working on different parts of it, so it's on hold until I get a new HD. You've got plenty of space. ;-)
Sorry, I don't have any suggestions as I'm a Linux user and have enough experience with macs to provide basic support and get by with how rarely I encounter them (read as - 'enough to make me dangerous'.) Otherwise I can direct you to the discussion at this link: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37576
