A lot of people here are going to disagree with me.

Favourite album with Ozzy: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Near-flawless from beginning to end (only real low point is Who Are You). It showed them mature and develop their progressive edge, which was the perfect road to take before the pseudo-punk maelstrom unleashed on Sabotage.

As far as the records without Ozzy are concerned, I like Dio as much as the next guy, and I can even muster some listens to the limited catalogue that has Gillan and Hughes as lead singer, but Tony Martin really brought a lot to the table for Black Sabbath. His sole downfall was that his tone was quite generic, though his pitch control was excellent and his projection was powerful. My favourite record with him is 1990's concept album, Tyr. The first seven songs are amazing, and the last two are kind of fillery, but as far as mainstream 90s metal was concerned at the time, at least they were letting their music speak as opposed to their hair. Still, there were much more interesting things going on at the time.

One thing to keep in mind that Black Sabbath has always been about Tony Iommi's songwriting/riffage and occasionally bolstered by Geezer Butler's lyrics (he was the prime lyricist, not Ozzy, which becomes clear in Ozzy's solo career, and not for flattering reasons.) All that Ozzy brought to the table was a very unique and enjoyable voice that itself is worth the legend of the band, but their catalogue should truly not be divided into pre- and post-Ozzy categorizations, as it only goes to denigrate the hard work put into the many great albums that he did not work on.

We sold our souls is a great compilation album with Ozzy, it has all the hits. But best album of all by BS was Heaven and Hell. Dio can sing and the boys played great on that album. Its one of my top 5 fav albums of all time!

Heaven and Hell is my fav. With Ozzy, I guess We Sold Our Soul for Rock N Roll...even if it is really a greatest hits record.
