man will need new power methods[propulsion] and as a result new metals..we will need speed of light travel to even tour this solar system.
at todays speeds it will take in excess of 3 years travel just to get to mars. lets hope no-one ever needs help.
this sort of travel is extremely unlikely within the next 1000 years.[providing man is still around]

We will need to colonize the moon. The only way to make space travel less costly is to have a moon base. The launch from the earth eats up most of the fuel for any trip. We would need to place a fuel dumpp on the moon ans stage larger ships there to travel elsewhere. Little shuttles would be able to hop to the moon but will still be costly.
Going to Mars, looks like a science experiment only at this point. Crummy real estate, lack of air, lack of water, etc. At this time science would not have answers to create a productive colony on Mars.

The bottom line is going to be a financial one. When it is cheaper to fly to the moon (or mars, or somewhere else) then mine, refine and build enough infrastructure to support a genetically diverse population, including production of an artificial atmosphere from available resources, then it could work. I'd say we're a generation away from seeing that happen though.
Although, could happen sooner if we also consider the cost of fixing the mistakes we're making here on earth. Maybe there will be a middle ground where it is simply too expensive to stay here. When the oceans are too high, temperature too hot, air too toxic, maybe it will be "cheaper" to move than to stay. Then we can get right to work on exploiting the next planet. It sure would be nice if we could work out how to live within our means here, esp since clearly the vast minority would be relocated once we've ruined earth.
That said, i'm sure the views would be wonderful up there. Sign me up!

Mars is not out of reach.. and the moon could be well on it's way to a permanent colony.. it is all within our technology.. but.. politics & special interest groups halted the big progress we once were making..

It will be a while, because the costs are huge and the perceived benefits small. Advancing technology may bring the cost down enough so that it makes more sense.

our ancestors came from Mars originally,(/the Nordics)
it was evacuated before it was in a cosmic colission and lost its orbit and atmosphere ,everybody that was left died ,
and now you want us to go back there
are you kidding,we will all die as well
