Divided we fall if divided means fighting each other in Civil War. That is what Abraham Lincoln meant when he used the phrase.
United we fall if united means everyone agrees to fight in another country's civil war. Particularly when we aren't even choosing which side to fight on.

Well, both have an equal amount of validity, at least in U.S. history. Federalist Paper No. 10, which was written to convince people to support the new U.S. constitution in the late 1780's, it is all about how the existence of different "factions", or groups with differing opinions, is absolutely necessary for the United States Government to function properly. Another Federalist Paper, No. 51, mentioned how these same factions are necessary for the system of checks and balance in the U.S. government to work properly. If factions are necessary for the system of Checks and Balances, the sole thing that protects our government from falling into the hands of tyrants, then then a view of "divided we stand, united we fall", holds a place in the government.
On the other hand, if citizens are not united in the sense that they all support the government (meaning that they support the ideals on which their government was founded and its subsequent constitution) to some extent, then the government will fall apart.
In conclusion, citizens must form factions about the INTERPRETATION of the constitution, but they must all support that constitution in order to have a stable government.

No. The Natzis were united. Communist Russia was united. It didn't do much for them. If you unite behind a lie or an injustice, you are doomed to fail in the end.
