Hawthorne often used forests (and walking excursions in general) as metaphors for confusion or moral ambiguity. (See the short story "Young Goodman Brown," for example.)

In fairy tales and in Shakespeare, the forest often symbolizes the unconscious or sub-conscious mind... maybe that will work?
