A 4 piece is a good drum set and is pretty much the standard now for general music. This will include a snare, bass drum, tom drum, floor tom. You may have to buy the cymbals, and cymbal stand seperately as well as a thrown and a pedal. Don't be fooled, you NEED a drum throne, even if it is a cheap one, just a regular old chair will not cut it.

If you just want to get down to playing some beats and are a beginner you could just buy a set hi hi hat cymbals, hi hat cymbal stand, snare, and a bass drum. Those are the 3 essential pieces in a drum kit.

One night at practice the drummer in my band busted his tom drum and only played with hi hats, snare, floor tom, and a bass drum. He sounded just as good as with a full kit. The point is....the kit doesn't matter, its what you can do with the kit that counts.

Either Mapec or Taye seem to be good, our drummer uses both and they sound great. Basic set = bass, snare, double toms, floor tom, hi hat, 2 crash, 1 ride, don't forget the stool, cymbal stands and bass speed pedal. Sticks, cow bell, drum head key. Either Zildjan or Paiste brand cymbals are the best.
