Why did Oprah Winfrey invest $40 million to built a school for girls in Africa and not in U S?

CNN quoted her as saying that she was tired of visiting schools in the US and hearing the kids ask her for ipods and sneakers. So she put her money into an African schools where the kids asked for school uniforms and text books. It is my opinion that since it is her money, she can do what ever she wants with it.

1. Even though we here in the US need more schools, we have more and better schools than Africa.

2. American Girls have opportunities that are not available to African girls.

3. $40 million goes a lot further in Africa than here.

4. The people in Africa would show Oprah some real gratitude instead of the media dick-sucking she would get here at home.

5. Oprah wanted to share her wealth with children who were actually underprivileged, not kids who were whiny because they had to choose between an iPod and a cell phone.

6. Oprah built a school for girls only because African girls are not taught a sense of self-worth and empowerment. African women are oftentimes treated at about the same level as cattle--as a commodity.

Because the girls in Africa is still very much in the disadvantage group. Most of the Africa countries dont have proper schools or opportunities that the people in america do have
I believe that it will mean more to the girls in africa to be able to go to school than for the girls in america cause the girls in africa dont get the proper eduction that they need

Education for girls in the US is free and mandatory. Girls in Africa don't have the same advantages for education as those in the US. er sumtin like dat.

I can think of four reasons she would have done that:

1.Charitable actions are always well appreciated and often times much needed.
2.Publicity
3.She’s a feminist (It was a girls’ school after all)
4.She has nothing better to do with her countless millions of dollars.

its her money- she earned it. she can do anything she wants with it. i'm glad she chose to do something for someone less fortunate than herself and not just indulge her own gluttonies. if you don't approve of her actions, become outrageously successful and build your own school in a place you'd prefer.
