Aries was never evil. The problem that comes into play when talking about Aries now is that it has gotten distorted. He was a God of War and wars are very violent things. War Gods of any religion are supposed to have horrible tempers to go with the violence of the situation. Aries, or Mars as the Romans called him, represented first Greece and then Rome and of coarse as Rome fell his reputation and mannerisms change since Rome was no longer a conquering Empire.

Aries is a god of war. Is war evil? I would think that war is neither good, nor evil,it just is. Like the Grim Reaper. Is the Grim Reaper good or evil? Death is part of life and neither good nor evil. The method by which each comes about is either good of evil. If a people are attacked and in that attack choose to defend themselves, they have choosen to engage in war. Is defending yourself evil? I do not think so. But it is war , nonetheless.

Aries, in contrast to Athena, represented the more brutal, animal kind of battle lust. Athena represented more of a strategic, rational kind of military approach. Aries was not looked on as favorably by the Greeks. I don't know if they thought of him as being as much evil, as stupid and comical.
When the Romans adopted Aries into their pantheon and he became Mars, he was given more prestige, because the Roman culture was more about praising militarism and conquest.

Aries doesn't have an evil bone in His "body".
Don't confuse fierce and evil, or else the lion is the servant of evil no?
Don't forget that Aries loves as fiercely as He fights. There is SO much more to Him than battle.

Ares is like the ultimate soldier (aka warrior) -- and when you need a good soldier, that really means something! So I wouldn't go with evil at all.

He wasn't evil. He was just serving his purpose. He was created for war to make war - that was his purpose. Just as Eros was created to help push love. See? Not evil. Just their purposes.
