I have a rifle that I bought in indiana and I'm moving to Illinois.

You will have to go to the police station and re-register the gun. Be certain to take your current registration with you, so they can see that you're already licensed in Indiana. After they get all the information, they'll probably just charge you their state license fee and you'll be off and receive the permit in the mail. At least that is MI law. Just check with the police dept. I know from MI to Ohio, you have to reapply. If a local cop gets caught with a gun off duty in that state, they are charged the same way a criminal is.

not legally. you'll have a let to apply a gun. and also you should get educated to apply it. carry mace, a own alarm, Binaca (breath spray--use like mace, however it hurts worse and may blind), etc. A gun is better difficulty than it is nicely worth, and yields better consequences if used.

Go to the Police Department or a gun shop. They will be able to tell you what to do. Or the Sheriffs office.
