My daughter is 10 and seems to think I'm made of money. She begs and pleads for all manner of electronic devices from ipods, cell phones, Sony Playstation 3, to Wii and all manner of toys and goodies. Just curious if all 10 year old children out there are coming to school with ipods, and cells and IMing each other. Am I just woefully out of touch with today's lifestyle or do I have some validity in keeping things simple and old-fashioned?
Would appreciate some words of experience, not just one-liners please!

Yes students today go to school with i-pod plugs stuck in their ear and talking on their cellphone. As new electronics come out, they want them. You need to explain to your daughter that she can only have one version of everything. Each kid is made up of electronics. And they IM each other 24/7 and they will never come off the computer if you don't yell at them. You can get her a phone, but please make sure she isn't talking to nasty boys or boys at all because she is kinda young. She is a pre-teen. When she turns 12, she should have more freedom, but not a lot. 12 or 15-16 is when they get most of their freedom. So don't let her grow up too fast. But yes the electronics are everywhere in kids' pockets nowadays!

you are the parent here, it's your decision. She's 10, do you really inside feel it's alright for you to be buying her an ipod, cell phone, and other electronics. There's a certain place where you have to draw the line and put your foot down. Suggest to her that she can use the cell phone only when she leaves the house and will be away from you, until she is older. I worked to earn my privileges and things were not handed to me on a silver platter. My parents didn't let me I'M people until i was old enough to thoroughly understand that there are pedophiles in the world that pose as kids the same age as i was. I grew up old-fashioned, playing with toys in my room and playing outside with limited electronic use. I don't regret my parents putting me through this. My parents helped me realize that some kids don't get more than a few toys in their room and a basketball or a bike. They raised me to realize what a privilege it was to have access to electronics. But my parents never gave in and bought me a PlayStation or a game boy, i saved my money and bought it on my own, it meant a lot more to me and i learned that money doesn't grow on trees. i hope this helps if not sorry to waste your time.

When I was that young it was giga pets, the difference is that mine was 20 bucks and her's is in the hundred ranges. I totally agree with making her earn the money for them. My sis in law is 14 and i bought her one of those cheap prepaid phones. If she keeps c or higher in school she can come over and work around the house for mins. for it. I also give her 5 dollars worth of mins for every b on a report card and 10 for every a. Also start teaching your daughter to look into value of things. Ipods look cool but there are much better MP3 players out there. they hold more music and often cost less. Just because all the other kids have one, doesn't mean she needs one. I still don't have a cell phone, mainly cause I haven't gone and bought myself one.

Well, a lot of kids have ipods and cellphones nowadays. It's what is probably expected of her by her classmates. But you are her parent, and I think it should be entirely up to you what kinds of things you buy your daughter. I suggest you get her to show you that she has the responsibility to have a cellphone. Put her to work around the house and milk this as much as possible. Same goes for the ipod, but if an ipod is too expensive, get her a cheaper mp3 player. Good luck!

Well a lot of kids have those things but she is 10 and sure doesnt need a cell phone. Make her work for some of her things and wait for christmas for others. All kids want to have all the cool things but most dont have them all so she will survive.

1. Work out your monthly budget on paper...or on a spreadsheet printout, or something similar.
2. Sit her down and show it to her, item by item.
3. Conclude your little demo by saying "We do not have enough money for even a FRACTION of the things that you want! There isn't enough money in our bank account. Sorry if you can't come to terms with that, but I can keep a roof over your head, clothes on your back, and food in your stomach and get you these stupid gadgets too."

U know kids r very demanding know a days and Snob with thier fellows i-e if one have i-pod only and other have cell phone only most of kids need both to have an edge on others make her understand that how many kids dont have food in Africa and Asia i am sure she will understand show her some documentry or pics of this misrable condition

Look, you need to realize that most children will ask for everything and that the more you give them, the more they will ask and the more they will want!
You need to give her what you can afford and what you think is best for her, not what "the other kids have". Make her earn the things that you do give her by doing chores and she gets nothing unless her grades are good.
She needs to learn that we have to work for what we want. If she still keeps bugging you all the time then you need to tell her how often she can ask you for things and give her negative consequences if she does not abide by that.

Well, they have the Pods on buses, but break rules by bringing the devices outside of the lockers, same with cells, and they also take cells out of lockers and "hide" them in their pockets. The pants reveal the cell.
The PS3 isn't that good. It blew up at testing and it's pointless.
The Wii is good. Because Wii can all enjoy it.

The best way to deal with this is 1) make her earn it through chores or 2) let her visit the local shelter to let her see how many children don't get anything and that she should be thankful for what she does have
