My situation is pretty common, and for the record I know quite a few gay men with kids from previous heterosexual marriages.
I married in the early 70's to the only guy I dated in high school. I've always been bisexual, and so is he. He comes from a long line of drunks who basically put everyone before his family. His fat her and grandfather were the same way. Not only wasn't I #1 in his life, I wasn't even on the list.
At the age of 49 I met the love of my life, who simply happens to be a woman. We are both bisexual, we laugh about making lousy lesbians but here we are, together forever. Oh and we have 3 daughters, a son, a son in law and a granddaughter between us, all great kids.
Alot of people are forced into heterosexual marriages by their culture, their society, their families or just their own fear. That doesn't mean they "become" homosexual. They always were, they simply didn't''t live the lifestyle for a while.

Because society is cruel and unaccepting.
We're all expected to fit into social "norms," to "conform," to not stand out or rock the boat.
So, many of us try to pretend we're straight. Thinking that if we date guys, even marry and have kids we'll magically become straight.
Only to realize much later on that it's never going to happen. That fairy tales don't come true and the only way we can have a happy ending is to write our own!

Like several other have said, we grew up being told that we were to get married and have a family. Being gay is wrong. We believed it and tried to be "normal". We denied ourselves for years. Then we realize that our feelings are normal and we can be who we want to be. Everyone's situation is different. DId I make a mistake marrying a man many years ago? Maybe. Do I regret the children that came from that marriage? Not on your life. They are my world.

Maybe because they didnt realize they were gay... when they were growing up in their day and age gay people werent as out as they are now, and all they saw on tv was straight people and they thought "oh I'm supposed to marry a man" it didnt occur to them that they could have liked or married a women.

When the church and family tell them they go "straight" (sorry, had to do it) to hell for living the homosexual lifestyle, they tried to conform to the "norm" set by those powerful influences.
Once they grew enough emotionally to accept their sexual orientation, they understood the life style in not a ticket to hell, simply an alternative lifestyle.
