Get an Xbox 360. THey have upgraded the firmware to support 1080i, you can get a HD-DVD player for it. The online play with Xbox live blows PS3 away and from the reviews I have been reading Xbox 360 has better graphics and way better load times for games, not to mention the 360 has a way better game lineup and they are just now really getting into the next gen titles. PS3 sales are garbage so there must be a reason for that. You can also wait for the new version of the 360 to come out which will have HDMI, HD-DVD, WI-FI built in, and more that has not yet been announced.

I own all three systems. I just picked up the wii today, and it's sitting in my car, so I haven't had a chance to play it yet...
However, to answer your question...I really think the XBOX360 is the better system right now (in the X360 vs. PS3 debate). I saw some of the replies to this question already, and everyone who says, "Get the PS3 because the graphics are so much better" really don't have a clue of what they're talking about. Here's a link (http://www.gamespot.com/features/6162742/index.html?tag=features;title;2) to a Gamespot article that does a side-by-side graphics comparison of some titles that are available for both systems. If you go to that article, you will notice some differences but nothing that's going to completely sway you one way or another. Honestly, you probably wouldn't notice any differences between the game, unless you did a side-by-side they did in the article.
Will the X360 be the better system in the long run? Who knows. Right now, the available titles for the X360 is vastly superior to what's out on the PS3 now. The only title I bought with my PS3 was Resistance: Fall of Man, and honestly, I was a little dissapointed with it. Gears of War is by far, hands-down the best game out on any of the consoles (again, imho only). Unless of course, you're around 9 or 10, in which case the Nintendo may offer titles more suitable to your age. With said, you really can't go wrong by picking up the 360 and Gears of War, and maybe Morrowind Oblivion (if you like RPGs that is).
Also, I have a 1080p Mitsubishi 62" television, and I was watching HD King Kong on the 360's HD-DVD player. Even though my television was in 1080i, I couldn't believe how clear the movie was. Unless you're a videophile, and have such discerning vision, I really think the difference between 1080i and 1080p is minimal at this point (then again I haven't watched any Blu-ray movies...cuz of course, Sony didn't provide any free movies with their system - there was a limited release of Talladega Nights with the first shipment, but fat chance of getting that bundle).
Which leads me into my last point. Which is price. I think after taxes I paid roughly $650 for my PS3 (60GB). I picked up my 360 for around $430, and the HD-DVD player for about another $220. But here's the thing, if you don't care about watching HD movies, then at least with the 360, you have the OPTION to buy, or not buy, the HD-DVD drive. Whereas, Sony doesn't give you the option to choose...you either buy the system and pay for the Blu-ray or you don't. Not the best option for gamers who just want to play games.
Well, that's my two cents. Good luck, and happy gaming.

Xbox360, sorry i bought a ps3 and i was kindof dissapointed, the ps3 right NOW has no games so the only reason is blueray, just wait out to buy the ps3, if you want a consel NOW, buy the 360, it's at its hight right now PS3 graphics card is the same level as 360 so dont listen to those stupid people, it DOES have 1080 but they also mentioned they willnot use that for gaming, GRAPHIXS are equal, 360 has Xbox live which is rather fun to use, SONY's internet is free, but it's a bare minimal, it only has a friends list. XBOX games are more FPS while PS3 is more like Final fantasy and Kingdom hearts

If you want to spend 600 dollars and just have a console sit there then buy the PS3. If you want to spend 400 dollars and actually use your console, then buy the Xbox 360. Or you can wait until Microsoft releases more information about the new Xbox 360 version, codename: The Zephyr.

xbox 360. with the ps3 you can't play games for ps1 or ps2, so what you are doing would be getting a system with more limitations, better graphics but not as good money wise. The xbox also has a network setup for online play, ps3's one is shotty at best.

if ur eventually gunna go hd, get ps3 cuz it already has bluray
ps3 60gb=599 already with bluray
total=599
360 20g= 399 no hddvd ($200 sold separately)
total with hddvd= 599
if u r gunna get ps3, u gunna wait for games to come, but resistance, imo, is a really good launch game
