To say someone speaks in monotone is not the same as being monotonous. The former means the tone of your voice doesn't vary noticeably; the latter usually means the content of your conversation is repetative or uninteresting. But, both can be changed if you choose to.

It's kind of just like many people don't realize they can't sing. A lot of people are monotonous and make the best of it (make fun of it, be sarcastic, etc.). :)

Your question reflects your attitude of sensibility. Its nice that you have a self checking process always alert in you, which is making you to rethink on the critic.

Remember that those who criticize you are your helpers for your progress for that they are doing service to you by showing the mud on us for free of cost. We visit a psychiatrist, to understand what our attitude is ! and we pay for that, so also these critics are letting us know the same for free of cost.

Another important aspect is that, we need not pay attention on each and every comment, for the reason that the comment may sometimes be the result of a casual attitude of others or ego centred feelings or agitated mood or confused state of others or by misunderstandings.

Its good to recheck once within us whether the comment is right or wrong but we should not let us hurt in our own heart.

If same type of comments are getting repeated, then we need to pay attention on them to rectify ourselves seriously. (if we are wrong).

If we feel more about the comments, then others take a chance to disturb us more number of times unnecessarily

I think to speak with a mono-tone. Can be repaired. It will take practice, experience and coaching.

Being a montonous person is a lot harder to resolve. It just means you are boring. You might have to settle for relationships with men as women will need to be entertained to maintain their interest in you.
