What I did when I went to state (as a freshman in highschool) for bass solo, what I ended up doing in preparation was lots and lots of scales. My voice teacher would have me doing my scales using different mouth positions like ahhh, eeeee, ooooo, ohhhh. Stuff like that. And if you've got a piano/ keyboard at home find out where the break in your voice is (where your voice begins getting strained and begins "cracking") and then go up and down on the piano around there to make those notes easier to hit. Good Luck.
