Read everything and anything. If you don't know a word and can't deduce it from the sentence, circle it and look it up. My father has an EXTENSIVE vocabulary just from reading comic books as a child. Reading is much more pleasurable than sitting down and studying word lists, and it will stick with you better. But most importantly, stick with it and be consistent. Read every day, different genres, and you'll experience all kinds of words because you cannot predict the vocab list on the test.

In general, it's said that reading reading reading is the best way to improve your vocabularly, for the SAT or otherwise.

If time is of the essence, though (ie you're taking the SAT in a month or two), I'd suggest that you get a couple of the SAT Word "prep" books that are available. And take practice tests. And by a Barron's or Princeton Review prep test book and work on your vocab, etc. with those.

Also, sign up for the SAT question of the day at www.collegeboard.com.

read all the books that you can. You might get a good friend that might be taking the SAT and you make up a game. Write down as many words as you can think of then look them up in the dictionary to make sure that they are spelled right.
