If it floats to the top it doesn't not mean its dead. Some snails will do this as quick transport.

Take it out of the water, if you see it retract its foot tighter its alive. If the foot loosens, its dead.

If the tank doesn't have a filter it could be dead. If it is dead, take it out right away, dead snails are quite toxic.

if it floats to the top it is not dead thats how it get around by the motion of the water it floats and then stick. Well give it a few days and if it doesn't move it is dead.

i already answered your question. and that bio major is wrong..haha..somtimes they let go or are knocked off of whatever thet are attached to. smell it. if it smells fishy it is dead. and get a TANK. barbs do not belong in a bowl.
