It was invented because people were tired of their 4 ton steam engines that really didn't have a lot of power. With the invention of the internal combustion engine you only had to have a few gallons gasoline in a tank rather than several gallons of kerosene and a few hundred gallons of water. Bottom line--Weight , power,size and convince.

What do you mean why? Electric motors did not generate enough power. Steam engines were difficult to operate and virtually useless during the winter months. At that time oil was extremely CHEAP. It only made sense to go the gasoline route. Does that answer your question?
