Light purple with black tie sure make you look dull. Deep purple certainly will do but you should wisely choose what sort of deep purple color do you want. Too deep make your tie ridiculously outstanding than your shirt. Make your shirt a mere background. My suggestion, if your shirt is plain light purple, try a little bit dark purple with geometrical design. It looks nice and more sensual. And if your shirt is light purple with some design, a deep color purple tie would do.

I take it you are wearing black pants
If so, then go to your closest department store (i.e. Macys) and pick out a new tie with black and light purple in it.
Those plain colored ties are out of style now, unless you plan on wearing one to a cocktail party. They really arent for everyday wear anymore, like when Regis Philbin wore them 5 years ago.

I would go with a black tie and like maybe formal pants that are black,black dress shoes and for a jacket any thing you think would be nice
