here are some details.... it is a 2001 pontiac grand prix GT and it just needs the rotors turned and new pads.... if i buy the pads will the shop be ok with it or do i have to use what they have (and the markup?).. oh, and it is my girlfriends...so i dont want to make money off of her, just save her a few bucks and not risk her life by changing it myself!!

YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, and shop around. With the current price of steel, it might be worth it to replace the rotors.

cmon man, you ned to know how to do these things and save that $. My brake pads usually run about $20.00 and I put them on myself, you need to have someone show you how to do it and then you practice it til you get it. The rotors usually are $10.00 a piece to turn. You'll save plenty of dough if you do it yourself. Go to the parts store and ask some of the mechanics that come out the store they may be willing to do it for you 4 a cheap price. I'm no mechanic, but I am mechanically inclined. I have women who ask me to change their brake pads all the time, its a good bit of tax free $ too.

At the shop i work in its $92/hour and its hours labour for doing pads (including test drive and inspection) and then 15 minutes per rotor, and then parts on it. depending on the brand of car and the brand of brakes, expect to pay anywhere from $50 - $250 for pads. also the prices do very with area you are located in.

depends on the vehicle. you can get some pads for $10 and other high end ceramic pads with sensors for $150. Let me know what vehicle you have and I can look it up and give you accurate pricing and what to expect.
Hope this helps and let me know if you need anything else.
