i bought a male maltese last weekend for $750 from a breeder who advertised on the internet. i met her and picked up the puppy, which is adorable. the problem is that now that she sold the puppy, i can't ask get her to answer any questions for me. i e-mailed her to ask what kind of shampoo to use and a couple of other small questions. she has not called or responded by e-mail. what is a breeder's responsibility after you pay a lot of money for a puppy? (i'm not the type that would bug her to death).

A GOOD breeder would follow up with you to see how the puppy is doing, recommend a good diet, tell you when the vet checkups need to be, and have certificates of health and lineage/parentage (If you bought purebred-ESPECIALLY for showing.) What YOU as a buyer should have done was checked them out on www.akc.org to see if they were registered with the AKC, done some more research on the breeder's themselves (most have professional names that they use and can provide information either via the web AND/or on paper of parental lineage and bloodlines so you KNOW that you're getting a good dog.) Then you should have made arrangements to travel to their house (I realize you met them on the internet-ALWAYS bad ju-ju) so that you could have seen the parents on the premises and looked at the other puppies to make sure that you didn't get your puppy from a puppy mill or farm and that you weren't getting the runt of the litter or the sickliest one. BTW- just out of curiosity, how old was your puppy when you picked him up? At least 8 weeks old? Had he been weaned from the mother yet? Did he have his first shots and been dewormed and get a checkup? This "breeder" isn't even deserving of the name, if that's how they're going to treat their clients. BUYER, BEWARE OF INTERNET PUPPY SALES!!! They are almost ALWAYS scams, you will lose a lot of money, there is no way to get it back, and if you're lucky enough, you might get a good puppy out of the deal. Next time, find a LOCAL breeder so you can do all this research, and make the trip. Or adopt a needy dog from the local pound. Older dogs need homes, too.

A good breeder would have told you all this up front.. even asked if you had any questions.

I have had a few Maltese and can perhaps help a little bit.

You use human shampoo & conditioner on them many breeders reccommend the Infusium 23.

You have to blow dry them or they will tangle and matt. They need brushing and combing every day and at least every 3rd day if you get lax about it.

They are pure angelic magesty when they are in full coats.

For potty breaking use the potty pads... the under bed pads made for people work the very same...(buy them in Walgreens) and move them closer to the door and pretty soon as they head toward the door.. just move them on outside...

Last but foremost.. be prepared for angel kisses.. and I will give you a couple of web sites that can give you some information.

Judy had to give up her kennel as she moved.... but her site is great.

Hope you enjoy and hope this helps

GOOD LUCK

honestly all the breeder has to do is give you the health certificate and other papers ( im not sure what they are called) and the rest is up to you. a good breeder should make sure you know what you are doing and if not refer you to a vet, but it is up to you once that puppy comes home. find a good vet and they can help with everything. also, give the breeder a break, maybe she is busy or out or somthing
