it's the brake. it might be worn out if your machine is older. if the machine didn't have it, it would spin for awhile before it stopped. it helps keep the load from going out of balance as it stops. if it just started to make this noise, call a repairman, and get a quote to replace it. if it's a lot, consider a new washer. if has always been this loud, it's just the design of your machine. good luck.

Manny,
It sounds like your laundry might indeed be off balance. When it is spinning fast, the tub stays centered, but as it slows it gets more and more wobbly and off balanced.

It happens at my house when we have small loads or loads with some towels, jeans or something heavy when wet.

The solution is stop the machine, and redistribute the clothes as evenly as possible. I usually turn the timer around and "re-spin" the laundry so it won't take forever to dry.

Good luck!

It may be from the washer needing to be leveled or the load of laundry might be uneven in the machine.

Is it just one clunk? Mine does it too and has since day one. I blame a brake/clutch, something mechanical. Since the machine is 13+ years, I'm not worrying about it.

Still you might find a service number for your make machine and call the customer service number and ask them.
