This is one of the more poorly phrased questions I have seen on Yahoo! Answers.

You should think about how you present yourself to the world, and about what prospects for success and happiness you will ever have if you insist on concerning yourself with useless crap. You could be learning and preparing to have a half-way decent existence, instead you are ranting about the definition of "emo" which can't matter to your existence in any meaningful way.

its not even emocore. its emotive hardcore.
emocore is easier than saying emotive hardcore
and emo is easier than saying emocore

so most people used emo.

the stereotype/fashion probably came from the misuse of the genre.
since the music industry decided to incorrectly label bands as emo, such as.. dashboard confessional, all of the people in that scene were considered emo, and dashboard confessional has a lot of sad songs.

anywho, the true meaning is emotive hardcore.
its like you said, a music genre from the 80s (and early 90s)
it came from hardcore punk.
pretty much died in the 90s.
youll never hear any true emo on the radio, btw

Emo can be a type of music and it does mean emotional.
BUT
Its NOT when people dress up in black and have bad hair or wierd clothes.
its NOT anything near goth
and its NOT a bad thing.
Emo is the way you express yourself through music.
Such as the way you dress or feel or act.
You reflect that in your attitude.
I think its pretty dumb if people put other people down for being emo
Because usually thats the LAST thing they need right there.

I guess I'm out of touch (I'm 24) but I remember when "emo" was just a label being slapped on the more emotional pop-punk songs coming out. True "emo" bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Broken Promise Ring, and Saves the Day were bands that came up in the hardcore scene but wrote emotional lyrics about being a kid and dealing with life.

Then Dashboard Confessional got big and made it popular to be in touch with your feelings. Then bands like Taking Back Sunday got big using easily identifiable lyrics but backed by a full band with a harder feel to it. (Adam from TBS with his inability to sing but his definite ability to convey emotion basically opened the door for what was to come.)

Next thing you know every band had to scream to get their point across. (hence the name Screamo) And the ones who weren't completely incomprehendable were forced to sing about ripping out their hearts and plucking out their eyeballs because they were so distraught that their ho ex-girlfriend of two weeks dumped them to date the manager of the wrestling team. Its obvious that people won't understand the severity of the situation unless you use such drastic imagery, right?

Now apparently, at least from what I've read on here, being "emo" means that you're what we called "goth" in highschool. Complete with the all black clothes, random piercings obtained by using a fake ID at Claire's at the mall, and the superficial wounds on the arms and legs.

All I know is that Hot Topic's shareholders are probably very happy.

My 16 yr. old step-daughter told me EMO stands for the emotional, I don't know I'm an adult...and I don't really understand your reference to the first emos as opposed to the 2007 emos. (When I was younger we had "new-wavers" and "head bangers")
