Straight from the dictionary:
ig·no·rant [ig-ner-uhnt] 1.lacking in knowledge or training

Yet all that you hear is "Man, you'se ign'rant!", "Y'alls jus' bein' ign'rant!", "I ain' talkin' to you man, you ign'rant, you ign'rant..." CALLING SOMEONE IGNORANT IS NOT AN INSULT. And the ridiculous part is that whenever people use the word ignorant incorrectly they are showing that they themselves are ignorant because they don't even know what the word means! Would it really be insulting to walk up to someone and say, "Yo, you don't know a lot of stuff!" or, "Dude, you're lacking in knowledge!"?

What happened to just calling people stupid or idiotic? At least they were insults. And what's with leaving out the "o" when they say it? It's a three syllable word for crying out loud!

Perhaps when someone calls another ignorant they are using a word that they think is higher in their vocabulary, and, they hope, higher than that of who they are speaking to. Calling someone stupid or idiotic allows for a quick comeback: for the other person to call them stupid/idiotic right back, and namecalling does not allow for one to prove that they are not indeed stupid or idiotic because the practice is stupid. Whereas, the use of the word ignorant allows for the ideal scenario of the person who was accused of ignorance not knowing the meaning of the word and, resultingly, the user of the controversial word would have their assumed superiority "proven" and the other would be left feeling inferior. Of course, the assumed "superior" person would actually be ignorant and not "ignorant."

Because ignorant sounds like a more intelligent word than idiot or stupid.
And it's supposed to be a refutation to racism.
Last, I rarely hear the 'r' in the word. I usually hear "IG-NANT."

Five will get You Ten that someone will make at least one "ignorant" reply to this question.
The simple answer is that some people are less well educated than You or I, and / or have a slightly different accent to the rest of Us.

I happen to be one person that DOES use it properly. I hate the word stupid or idiot. But that's just me.
