I'm so tired of Conservatives trying to steal Lincoln. The Republican party of the 19th century was completely different than today. They were the ones who called for radical reform to the instituion of slavery, does that sound conservative to you? Sounds kind of LIBERAL to me.
If another Republican boasts about how they are from the "Party of Lincoln" again, I hope that they are personally haunted by the ghost of Lincoln for the remainder of their life.

In case you hadn't noticed, Mr. Neocon Imperialist, the Democrats who supported slavery and racism formed the Dixiecrats and eventually became Republicans.

I asked this question about 10 days ago.

It was pretty universal that he'd be a Democrat, with a few Libertarians.

I suspect the Libertarian votes were from Libertarians.

You are crazy. Lincoln was a Republican, whether you like it or not. If it helps you out, Lincoln suspended many constitutional protections for the Civil War. It was NOT fought to end slavery, but to maintain the Union, and Lincoln advocated for blacks to be returned to Africa. He was from the Midwest, not an effete New Englander or fruits and nuts Californian.

Oh yeah, and he kept firing crappy generals during the war and kept the fight up despite negative press coverage until he got US Grant in charge.

To me, sounds more like Bush, Reagan, Ford than John Kerry or Nancy Pelosi.

"As President, he(Lincoln) built the Republican Party into a strong national organization. Further, he rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy."

and the democratic party of kennedy was completely different thtat it is today.

and lincoln was a republican..he told people they could have what they wanted if they worked for it..which sound like todays repubs,

unlike the todays dems who say , "oh you poor thing, youre so downtrodden and shut out of society, theres no sense for you to try, just grab onto the teet of the govt ,and we'll provide everything for you, and you better keep voting for us, because without us the big bad republicans will eat you up"..
its pathetic
the minorities buy into this generation after generation, and it gets ingrained in them..the dems are the ones who still got the chains on them.
if they only realized it, they could truly be free.. its a big country with alot of opportunity, you just have to get out a grab it.

gee, i always thought it was southern democrats who formed the KKK. and i am a white republican married to a black man and i can tell you honestly, that every racist i have met is a southern democrat.

(of course, i've met racists who did not let on they were, but you can just tell, after awhile.)

besides all that, what does it matter anyway? i keep hearing how the parties changed after the civil war. i've never had a satisfactory explanation told to me for this reasoning. if you know something i don't, let me know. fire off some links or something, cause i am not willing to take your word for it.

Lincoln would have been smeared non-stop by Karl Rove, the republicans, and the right-wing propaganda mill we have today.

He was far too intelligent, wise, and practical to have been one of today's republicans.
