I am an African american female totally in love with my Greek boyfriend (the expression "Once you go Greek, the rest is weak") is sooo dead on true. I totally idolize him, and we have so much in common. He is also my bestest friend ever. We have been talking long distance for a year and we have come to agreeing that I go to where he is. The problem is his parents (luckily his siblings are ok with me.) I know the culture and how they view us (His parents are in objection of us marrying.) I am not that type of african american that the media often portray's black women. I listen to classical music, a love traditional greek music (something like Notis Sfakianakis) and a huge fan of Celine Dion, Buble, and Josh Groban. I hate guys with baggy pants. But just a normal girl so my question is ............ What does it take for me to win the affections of his parents (well accept me, they don't have to love me.)

Greek people are not racist, well not in they way that most people may think. Through out history the greek culture has been vary accepting and embraces different races. However, they do tend to be elitist; they feel their culture is supeior, not becuase the colour of their skin or becuase of their genetics, but becuase of their culture and traditions.

Greeks believe that they are lucky to have such a rich heratige and his parents are not worried about your relationship, but more about their heratige being passed on to their children. Once you understand this, something that may be quite difficult to understand if your not Greek, but if you do, you will know how to win the parents over.

I can definitly tell you they will love anyone that their son falls in love with, that is guaranteed, (once your married) however, they will not soften up until you show them that you will not be a threat to them passing down their traditions to their grandchildren..

Oh and Greeks respect individuals that can stand up for themselves.. so you have to be assertive! But you also have to be respectful remeber they are your elders.

Trust me on this one... and yes i am Greek...

And yes I believe i am culturaly superior.. :P

YOu will never please his parents is right !! They are not prejudice to you on what music you listen to !!! They are prejudice on your skin colour . It is all really up to your boyfriend and how much he loves you ...Is he willing to go against his parents wishes ?? My friend a few years back was black dating an Italian guy and due to his parents threathening to disown him he gaved her up . this is not always the case !! I know another girl who is black and is married to a Greek guy and it was his mom her approached her for him . Like I said its up to your boyfriend ...his decision will decide your future ...be careful not to be strung along and at the same time their is other fish in the sea and not all parents no matter the age they grew up in have the same beliefs!!!Good luck !! I am half chinese and my grandmothernever likes any of her daughter in laws as they were not Chinese! Due to this she caused my parents to split ....my uncle on the other hand decided to place his mom in her place and his wife and himself got back together and decided to stay away from her and only meet on serious family occasions !\
Psst try South American families :) We're pretty warm and open to many cultures :)Hmm never mind I have never dated a south American or Chinese guy ....though my grandmother tried to bribe me once into dating Chinese !

Treat his parents with respect and if you make their son happy they will love you eventually.

I would leave him as we should learn to respect our elders and not cause problems.

Believe me, you will never please them.
