Most people would say alcohol and drug problems, but more often is mental health problems. People who have both often lack the resources to get off the streets once they find themselves there.

It's easier than most think to become homeless, many people are just a few paychecks away from it.

If you want to open a shelter you would benefit from getting some experience working in a shelter first. You'll learn from actual homeless people why they became homeless and you'll be able to see with your own eyes what kinds of things they would appreciate in a shelter and what kinds of services they'd need from you.

You will also learn about the other services in your area and you'll be able to network with them better because you will have made connections with them. Social service programs don't operate in a vacuum. You'd be working hand in hand with other programs.

When you go to pitch the idea to whoever you plan on asking for money you need to be able to provide researched answers to their questions. It would look much better for you to have gone to the library and researched the reasons why people become homeless. You can't quote us here on Y!A as a reliable source.

If you have never owned your own business or organization I suggest you do a lot of research on that, too. There are laws that govern the creation of non-profit agencies.

Keep that desire to change the world. It's awesome and more people should have that drive. But in order to make sure that your shelter becomes a successful way of helping the homeless in your area you really need to do a lot of background stuff before even getting to that point.

I wish you the best of luck!
